Heathrow Airport, Terminal 5

Heathrow Airport, Terminal 5

Heathrow (LHR) is Britain's largest and busiest airport. This year alone, almost 80 Million passengers are expected to pass through Heathrow, and half a million planes will be taking-off and landing! Heathrow is not only huge, but is currently ranked as Europe's Number 1 airport.

Heathrow lies about 20 west of central London, and London's Paddington Station can be reached in approx 15 minutes using the Paddington Express train service that runs every 15 minutes.

After the closure of Terminal 1 in 2015 (to be demolished and replaced by an extension of Terminal 2), Heathrow is made up of the following 4 Terminals:

  • Terminal 2, also known as The Queen's Terminal, is split into two connected buildings- Terminal 2A & 2B- and is the newest of Heathrow's terminals, after re-opening in 2014 following a total rebuild and modernisation. The design of Terminal 2 uses the same innovative 'toast-rack' principal- a layout that maximises use of the airport's land by placing the terminal building and its satellites perpendicular to the runways (instead of the Gates running-off long Piers)- that was first used in the construction of Terminal 5. Terminal 2 is the base of Star Alliance member airlines, and mostly serves those airline's.

  • Terminal 3 is currently used by Oneworld member airlines, plus a few other non-affiliated airlines.

  • Terminal 4 is used by all SkyTeam member airlines, plus a number of other airlines. Like Termiinal 3, Terminal 4 has traditionally been used for long-haul flights from a large mix of different airlines.

  • Terminal 5 is a complex of 3 buildings- a main building, 5A, plus two smaller satellite buildings, 5B & 5C. T5 is the largest of Heathrow's terminals, and was designed to handle 35 million passengers a year. The main building was opened in 2008, and is the largest free-standing structure in the UK. Terminal 5 is currently used exclusively as one of the three global hubs of the International Airlines Group, served by British Airways & Iberia.
